High-Precision Tool Length Measurement & Tool Breakage Detection for CNC Machines

The Magnescale TS40 tool setter (TS40L2 / TS41L2 / TS42L2) is a high-performance solution for tool length measurement, tool breakage detection, and process control on CNC machining centres.

Designed for vertical machining centres, the TS40 combines non-contact sensing technology, exceptional repeatability, and robust environmental protection to ensure consistent machining accuracy in demanding industrial environments.

Key features

  • Ultra-High Precision Measurement – Achieve repeatability of ≤1µm, ensuring reliable and consistent tool measurement for precision machining.
  • Prevent Tool Breakage & Scrap – Detect tool wear, chipping, and breakage early using integrated reference point and overtravel (OT) signals — reducing costly machining errors.
  • Built for Harsh CNC Environments – With IP67 protection, the TS40 is resistant to coolant, chips, and contamination.
  • Long-Term Reliability with Non-Contact Sensing – Uses a non-contact magnetic detection system, eliminating wear and maintaining stable performance over time.
  • Optimised for Small Tool Measurement – Low measuring force (0.6 ± 0.2N) allows accurate inspection of small and delicate tools

How it works

The TS40 uses a magnetic, non-contact sensing system to detect tool position without mechanical wear.

  • A reference point signal is triggered when the tool measurement surface is pressed approximately 1 mm
  • An overtravel (OT) signal is triggered at around 5 mm, acting as a safety limit to prevent damage

This dual-signal system enables:

  • Accurate tool length measurement
  • Safe operation with machine protection

Advanced Air Protection System

The TS40 incorporates an integrated air system that:

  • Blows air across the measurement surface to remove coolant and chips
  • Prevents contaminants entering internal components
  • Assists in lifting the measurement surface during operation

Air supply requirements:

  • Dry air
  • 0.2 to 0.7 MPa

Typical applications

The TS40 tool setter is ideal for:

  • CNC vertical machining centres
  • Aerospace and automotive component manufacturing
  • Precision subcontract machining
  • Medical and high-tolerance engineering
  • Small tool and micro-machining environments

Why choose the TS40

  • Enables automated tool verification on machine
  • Reduces risk of scrap and machining errors
  • Designed for long-term reliability in production environments
  • Supports efficient and repeatable machining processes

What is a CNC tool setter used for?

A tool setter measures tool length and checks for tool breakage directly on the machine, ensuring machining accuracy.

How does the TS40 detect tool position?

It uses a non-contact magnetic detection system that outputs a reference signal and an overtravel signal for precise and safe measurement.

What happens if the tool goes too far?

The overtravel (OT) signal triggers, allowing the machine to stop and preventing damage to the tool or setter.

Can the TS40 operate in coolant environments?

Yes — it features IP67 protection and an air purge system to prevent contamination from coolant and chips.

Is the TS40 suitable for small tools?

Yes — its low measuring force allows accurate measurement of small or delicate tools.
